📖 The Open Rate Playbook: 6 Levers That Move the Needle
You can write the best newsletter in the world… But it doesn’t matter if no one opens it.
This week, we’re going deep on what actually improves open rates. Every tactic below has been tested by operators and optimized for 2025.
No theory. Just high-powered tips (inspired by Matt McGarry’s post here) to get more eyes on every email.
🧹 1. Clean Your List
If you only do one thing, do this.
Removing inactive subscribers is the fastest way to improve open rate and deliverability.
Clean it monthly (automate if you can)
Remove hard bounces, spam reporters, and fake emails
Remember: A bloated list drags everything down.
📥 2. Deliverability Best Practices = Insurance
Poor deliverability = poor open rates. Protect your sender reputation with this stack:
Monitor performance → GlockApps
Verify new emails → Kickbox or NeverBounce
Compress images → Use TinyPNG
Sending volume >1M? → Get a dedicated IP
Technical setup → SPF, DKIM, DMARC (and validate them)
🧪 3. Test Subject Lines Like Thumbnails
Mr. Beast spends $10K on YouTube thumbnails.
Your subject line is your thumbnail.
Treat it like one.
Split testing commonly leads to +2–5% open rate gains.
Over the course of a year, that compounds big time.
✅ 4. Upgrade Your Thank You Page
Most people ignore this page. You shouldn’t.
It’s the one place you guarantee 100% visibility. Use it to:
Show a preview of what’s coming next
Tell people to move your email to Primary
Your thank you page sells the next open, not just the opt-in.
🚫 5. Avoid Bad Subscriber Sources
Open rate ≠ engagement rate.
Some sources (like paid recs or co-reg) inflate open rates via automated opens, but have terrible CTRs.
Track these metrics by source:
Open rate
CTR
Unsubscribe rate
Purchase rate
Then kill underperformers. Especially the cheap ones.
✍️ 6. Content Still Wins
The subject line gets the open. The content gets them to keep opening.
Here’s how to upgrade your content game:
Ask for feedback: polls, replies, surveys, calls
Publish daily on LinkedIn/X to test ideas
Write based on real questions from your readers
Define your “Job To Be Done”
